"I'm walking on sunshine … oh … oh … I'm walking on sunshine … oh … oh … oh, and does it feel good," I sang as I walked around the house, pulling my dark hair up into a ponytail.
On that particular day, I was in an especially good mood. Taylor was taking the kids to the zoo while I went out and ran errands. To most people that probably wouldn’t sound like much, but after being used to hauling around three kids while grocery shopping, a day without the kids sounded like heaven. Taylor had already left with the kids, so I grabbed my purse and headed out the door..
I felt somewhat awkward leaving the house without a child in my arm, but I quickly got over that. I drove to the grocery store with the radio up full blast as I sang along with the radio. Some days it just felt so nice to get out and be alone.
It was also strange because only a couple of weeks earlier I was freaking out over Hannah going to school, but sure enough, Taylor was right. It didn't bother me that much anymore to drop her off at school in the morning. And Zeke had started preschool, and dropping him off at school for a few hours a few days a week didn’t turn out to be so bad either. It was actually rather nice to have only one child to for a few hours. And usually after preschool, Zeke came home and was ready for a nap, so it all seemed to be working out rather nicely.
Once I was at the grocery store, I took my time going down each aisle. Usually when I had the kids with me, I'd end up returning to the store a few days later to pick up several items I had forgotten, so it was nice to take my time and make sure I got everything I needed. I even had time to look at the back of the boxes of some of the items for cooking tips. I never in all of my life imagined being that thrilled to be in a grocery store.
Then as I was turning one of the corners, I ran into another cart.
"Oh, sorry, excuse me," I said without looking up as I moved my cart out of the way and began to proceed.
"Eden?" I heard.
"Yes?" I said, looking up and recognizing Seth as the owner of the cart I had ran into.
"I thought that was you," he smiled.
"Oh, hi," I smiled. "I wasn't even paying attention."
"Well, what have you been up to?" he asked. "I haven't seen you at the gym for awhile."
"Oh, I know," I nodded. "I've just been so busy lately that I haven't made it to the gym."
"Yeah, that happens sometimes," Seth nodded. "I hope you get back to the gym soon though."
"I will," I nodded as I began to push my cart. "I better go."
"Hey, are you busy tomorrow afternoon?" he asked.
"Tomorrow?" I asked.
"Well, I thought if you weren't too busy that maybe we could go out for lunch," Seth said. "I really enjoyed talking to you."
"I did too, but I'm not so sure lunch is a good idea," I began.
"Oh come on," Seth coaxed. "We could discuss a workout for you. After all, I am a fitness trainer."
"Well ..." I began. I couldn't believe I was even considering it.
"Please?" Seth asked, his eyes pleading with mine.
"Okay," I finally nodded.
"Great," Seth grinned. "Meet me at the cafe where we had lunch the other day at - say - around noon?"
"Okay," I nodded before I began to walk away.
As soon as I was in the next aisle, I stood there for a moment gripping onto the cart. Had I just agreed to go on a date?
I paced around the living room nervously rubbing my hands together. I didn't know what to do. Had I actually agreed to go on a date with Seth? I wasn't sure. I didn't know if Seth considered it a date or not. I couldn't believe this. I knew that I should have just told Seth no thanks, but I couldn't resist his charm. I didn't know what was going through my mind. I was a married woman. I couldn't just go out for lunch with some guy that I barely knew. But then again, Seth seemed so nice.
I ran my hand through my hair with a loud sigh.
'So what if Seth seems nice.' I thought. "Audrey seemed sane, but look at how that turned out," I mumbled to myself.
I didn't know what to do. I thought about not meeting Seth for lunch the next day, but I knew I shouldn't do that. If I did, I knew I would spend the rest of my life avoiding the gym for fear of bumping into him again. I didn't want to spend the rest of my life avoiding him.
But on the other hand, I could not tell Taylor that I was going out for lunch with a practical stranger. Taylor would blow a fuse if I told him that.
"How do you do it, Ede?" I asked myself as I looked at my reflection in the mirror above the fireplace. "How do you always manage to get yourself in these types of situations?"
I felt like slapping myself across the face. Why hadn't I ever told Seth that I was married? How could I forget to mention that vital piece of information? Why had I ever gone out for lunch with him in the first place?
I wanted to tell myself that I didn't know the answers to those questions, but deep down in my heart, I did. I was attracted to Seth, and I liked the attention that I was getting from him. I liked the idea that a man other than Taylor was actually attracted to me as well.
I didn't know what was wrong with me. I knew I shouldn't have been feeling that way. I loved Taylor, and he loved me, but somehow that wasn't quite enough for me.
I shook my head slightly, trying to clear my head as the front door opened and Hannah and Zeke ran inside followed by Taylor, who was carrying Saffie.
"Mommy!" Hannah smiled as she ran over to me and hugged me.
"Hey, sweetie," I said. "Did you have fun at the zoo?"
"Yeah," Hannah nodded. "It was great."
"What about you, Zeke? Did you have fun?" I asked.
"Uh-huh," he nodded with a yawn.
"Somebody's sleepy," I grinned.
"Am not," Zeke said.
"Hannah Banana, why don't you and Zeke go put your souvenirs from the zoo upstairs, and then Mommy and I will take you out for dinner," Taylor said.
"Okay," Hannah and Zeke smiled.
"Oh, she looks wore out," I commented as I took Saffie, who was fast asleep, and held her close to me.
"She loved the zoo," Taylor smiled. "Especially the dolphins."
"She liked the dolphins?" I asked. "They're my favorite."
"She had a blast watching them," Taylor commented as he kissed my cheek softly. "How was your day?"
"It was ... quiet," I replied with a soft laugh.
"Well, maybe next time you'll come with us?"
"Definitely," I agreed as Hannah and Zeke came downstairs.
"Are we going to eat now?" Hannah asked.
"Sure, Banana," Taylor nodded.
I watched the kids as we all headed out to the car. I couldn't help but think of how beautiful and perfect they all were. Of course, every mother believes that their child is the most beautiful one in the world, and I too was one of those mothers. I loved my kids so much.
After I fastened Saffie and Zeke into their car seats and was in the front passenger seat of the car, I turned and looked at Taylor. I couldn't help but notice how wonderful he looked as well.
"What?" he asked, looking at me curiously.
"I love you," I whispered as I leaned over and kissed him gently on the lips.
"I love you, too," he replied before he started the car.
As we were going to the restaurant, I made a decision. I was going to meet Seth for lunch the next day, but I was only going to let him know that I was a happily married woman.
As I sat in the restaurant waiting for Seth to arrive the next day, I couldn't help but stare down at my wedding ring. Had Seth not seen it? How could he miss it? It was a huge rock on my rather small hand, so it was almost nearly impossible to miss.
I sighed to myself. Maybe Seth had noticed. Maybe he didn't care that I was married. Maybe I was reading into this completely wrong. Maybe this wasn't a date. Maybe it was simply just two friends getting together for lunch.
I wanted to believe that was all it was. Then I wouldn't feel so bad about not telling Taylor that that was where I was going. I didn't know what was wrong with me. I felt like all I had been doing lately was lying.
I shook my head in aggravation at myself. I couldn't believe I was doing this. I almost stood up and walked out of the restaurant right then, but as I was beginning to stand up, Seth walked into the restaurant and spotted me right away.
I sat back down and waited for him to come over to me. It was too late to back out now. He was already there. Now all I had to do was stick to my guns and tell him that I was married.
Easier said than done. Seth looked incredible. I damned myself for ever having a crush on John Mayer because Seth looked a lot like him, which caused my heart to beat faster as he walked closer to me.
"Hey, sorry I'm late," he smiled.
"It's no problem," I shrugged.
"Have you ordered yet?" he asked.
"No, I waited for you," I replied.
"Thanks," he said as he opened a menu. "So, what's good?"
"Everything here is pretty good," I replied as I stared at my menu. “I thought we had this discussion the last time we were here.”
“True enough,” he laughed. “So, what are you getting?" he asked.
"I'm just going to get a salad," I replied.
"Healthy choice," Seth smiled.
I forced a smile.
A few minutes later our waitress came and took our order. After she was gone, Seth turned to me.
"So, what do you do for a living?" he asked.
"Well, I graduated from the University of Tulsa at the end of May," I began.
"Oh, really? What was your major?" he asked.
"Music education," I replied.
"So, are you teaching anywhere?" he asked.
"No, not yet," I answered. "Actually, I'm a stay at home mom."
"Oh, you have kids?" he asked. "How many?"
"Three - two girls and a boy," I answered.
"Well, that's cool," he smiled. "How old are they?"
"Five, four, and six months," I answered.
"Wow, you don't look old enough to have five-year-old," Seth commented.
I laughed lightly. "I'm not," I replied.
"What about their father?" Seth asked.
"Oh, he's a great dad," I replied as I fiddled with my wedding ring.
"How is he as a husband?" Seth asked.
My heart nearly leaped into my throat. Seth knew that I was married?
"He's a great guy," I replied. "He puts his heart into everything that he does - especially his work."
"So, I assume that he spends a lot of time in the studio," Seth commented.
"How'd you know that he was a musician?" I asked slightly taken aback.
"I asked around about you," Seth confessed.
"Did you?" I asked nervously. "Why?"
"Well, I had to know who the gorgeous woman coming into the gym was," Seth grinned. I wanted to smile. He said I was gorgeous! I couldn't even remember the last time someone had told me that, but I stopped myself from smiling.
"Seth, I don't know what your intentions are..." I began. "But I love my husband."
"I'm sure you do," Seth replied. "And my intentions are only to be your friend."
I stared at Seth for a moment. Only a friend? Somehow I didn't quite believe that, but I was willing to accept it. I liked Seth, and as much as I didn't want to, I couldn't help myself. I knew what I was doing was wrong. I was a married woman, so meeting up with another man that I was attracted to was wrong.
"That's okay, isn't it? You're allowed to have friends of the opposite sex, right?" Seth asked.
"Yes, I am allowed to have friends of the opposite sex," I replied, smiling a little.
"Okay, good," Seth grinned as the waitress brought our food out.
After we were finished with our lunch, Seth and I went our separate ways. I went out to my car and just sat there for a minute. I didn't know what I was getting myself into with Seth, but I knew that if Taylor found out, the consequences weren't going to be good.
